Trouble Shooting Explorer View File Preview.

The Preview Displays as Hexadecimal numbers.

The first thing to check is that you have the correct Explorer View preview engine selected. At the left of the Explorer View toolbar is a list of available file viewers for that file type. Click the down arrow to select and change viewers. If no viewers are available for this file type it will only show "Hexadecimal" in the list.

The file that I want to preview is not supported.

Once you have checked the drop down arrow for available viewers (see above) and established that a viewer is not available for this file type please send an email to our support department using the link on the page. If you send three sample files we will quickly be able to determine if your file type can be added to the Explorer View preview engine.

The preview window appears to be frozen or not displaying anything.

In most situation a problem like this can be fixed by shutting down and restarting Microsoft Explorer View (if you are using Explorer View for Windows Explorer), or Microsoft Outlook (if you are using Explorer View for Microsoft Outlook).

If the problem persists, reboot your PC to enable the Explorer View drivers to be reloaded. Advanced users may achieve this by opening the Windows Task Manager and ending the Explorer View processes [if you need to start a new Explorer process, click "File > New Task(Run...)" and type "explorer"].

Do you have IE7 or higher installed?

Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7 can influence the actions of Windows Explorer, particularly if you are running Vista.

To check Internet Explorer 7 settings, click:

  • Tools > Manage Add-ons - Enable or Disable Add-ons;
  • check "Add-ons Currently Loaded into Internet Explorer;
  • and make sure that "Explorer View by GetData" is enabled.
